The drug’s patent for Viagra has been in the United States for years. It was granted in 1998 by the Food and Drug Administration, which requires drugmakers to submit patent applications that include a clear warning on the ingredient’s use, in bold font.
Pfizer has been trying to get other companies to produce generic versions of Viagra. In April, for example, a German company that makes generic versions of Viagra said it was making its own generic versions of the drug.
A spokesman for Pfizer said, “We are working on the next steps and trying to get the generic version of Viagra to be approved as an affordable alternative for patients who cannot afford it.
“Our global strategy is to make sure that the generic version of Viagra is as safe and effective as possible.”
The FDA’s own testing revealed that some Viagra and generic versions contain less than a third of the active ingredient in the FDA-approved drug. The drug’s safety has been investigated by the Food and Drug Administration for possible abuse, such as diabetes or cardiovascular problems, the agency has said.
Viagra and the generic drug are sold by the popular drug company Pfizer. The company did not respond to a request for comment.

A Boots spokesperson said that the man affected by erectile dysfunction should buy the drug themselves wherever practically possible.
Men with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure, strokes or those taking certain other medicines, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
A four-pack of the tablets will cost £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99.
Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day.
